I know that high end artists DO watermark their artwork - on DA this especially noticeable. A large amount of my watchlist put in subtle watermarks in places where they can't be cropped out, but they're smart about it. Artists who are professionals, or at least want to appear professional, not only know how to do it in such a way that doesn't effectively destroy the composiiton, but probably realize that if someone really wanted to, it takes 10-60 minutes in photoshop to remove it. The point is to make it clear that the art is YOURS. Have some fucking pride in it.
What I find most amusing about the whole thing is that the practice of BAD, UGLY, DISTRACTING watermarks are a distinct habit of the FURRY and ANIME fandoms - I have no idea why this is. Logically, I'd like to take a survey and ask the '
But, of course, I'd get flamed in the process, because logic is the enemy of the internet.

Me, anyone could take my stuff. All I've got is a little sig int he corner, not covering anything up...
But yes, if someone's well known enough to have stuff stolen on a regular basis and can do it subtly, a watermark works. Otherwise, gah.

All that said, I think those big watermarks over everything is silly looking. For the most part it's people who want you to pay for the un-watermarked art. Me, it simply means they'd loose my patronage.

As for the watermark issue, mine are usually small and discrete, the style I was taught to use in high school. As mentioned above, since I'm not part of the anthro community, my work isn't well enough known that people who might like it find it to steal. At least I've never heard of it getting stolen, nor found it posted anywhere I've not placed it.
The huge watermarks that so distort the work that you have to struggle to see what's part of the work and what's the watermark should be dumped. I don't mind fair-sized watermarks that are discrete; *thrumyeye's new watermark is both visible and discrete enough to look rather cool, to my eye: [link] And even with the nice watermark on it, this pic has been stolen by another deviant "artist" who thinks that she should be allowed to repost other's work in her gallery. Duh, this is what your FAVORITES is for! Then no one cares how many works by others are on your page, as long as you're not making some implied claim to having taken these shots or (in one case) having drawn said picture. I don't expect this gallery of stolen work to outlast today, so I won't bother linking to it, but *thrumyeye has in her journal if you're curious and if the work is still up when you take a peek. This thief is so ballsy that she doesn't even try to crop out the watermarks!
